For people living with diabetes, annual diabetic eye exams play a critical role in protecting long-term vision health. Because diabetic retinopathy often develops without noticeable symptoms, many individuals are unaware that vision-threatening damage is occurring until the disease has already progressed. Early detection remains one of the most effective ways to prevent avoidable vision loss.
That was the case for Tawanna, a 52-year-old woman living with Type II diabetes who began experiencing occasional vision changes but wasn't sure what was causing them. As an amputee with limited mobility, traveling to medical appointments can be challenging, making routine preventive care more difficult to access. When Tawanna learned she could complete a diabetic eye exam from the comfort of her own home, she welcomed the opportunity.

During her in-home diabetic eye exam, retinal images were captured by a trained retinal imaging technologist and reviewed by a board-certified ophthalmologist. The screening identified severe diabetic retinopathy in one of Tawanna's eyes, a finding that ultimately led to a timely referral for specialist care.
Following the screening, Tawanna was referred to a retina specialist for further evaluation and treatment. Additional follow-up care confirmed diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, allowing her care team to begin treatment before further vision deterioration could occur. Today, she receives ongoing care and monitoring to help preserve her sight.
For Tawanna, the screening provided much-needed answers during a time when she was already managing multiple health conditions.

Her experience highlights how convenient, accessible diabetic eye exam screenings can help connect individuals to earlier detection, faster referrals, and potentially vision-saving treatment. By helping overcome common barriers such as transportation challenges, mobility limitations, and scheduling difficulties, in-home screenings make it easier for people with diabetes to receive the preventive care they need.
