At Retina Labs, our Field Technologists do more than deliver preventive screenings directly to health plan members' homes. They take the time to connect with members on a personal level, understand their individual needs, and help overcome barriers to care while making a lasting difference in the communities we serve.
In honor of Ophthalmic Technician Appreciation Week, we're proud to spotlight Jaime Cathcart, one of our Retinal Imaging Technologists whose compassion, dedication, and member-centric approach exemplify the values at the heart of Retina Labs' mission.
Building a Career Focused on Adaptability & Compassion
Jaime's journey into healthcare began with an unexpected opportunity while working in ophthalmology practice management. After gaining experience in administrative operations, she was encouraged to occasionally fill in for ophthalmic technicians, sparking an interest that would ultimately shape her career.
With a professional background spanning medical office administration, optometry, and several years of providing in-home preventive screenings, Jaime's career has been driven by a desire for personal growth and the opportunity to provide for her four children. After discovering Retina Labs while exploring new career opportunities, Jaime joined our team to bring her valuable clinical experience and a genuine passion for helping others.
Bringing Quality Care Directly to Members' Homes
For Jaime, no two days in the field are alike. Her mornings often begin with an espresso before preparing her mobile screening equipment and reviewing her schedule of in-home member appointments for the day ahead. Throughout the day, she combines technical expertise with a personal touch to ensure each member feels comfortable, informed, and respected during their visit. Whether adjusting retinal imaging techniques to accommodate a member's physical limitations, navigating challenging home environments, or simply sharing a laugh, Jaime approaches every appointment with patience and flexibility.
Her work also addresses a persistent challenge facing health plans: reaching members who might otherwise miss recommended preventive screenings due to barriers that limit their access to care. "I have come across many members over the years that have not been to the eye doctor," Jaime explains, citing transportation difficulties, competing medical appointments, and limited access to assistance as common barriers.
For these members, an in-home diabetic eye exam provides an opportunity to identify potential vision concerns and encourage necessary follow-up care that might otherwise be delayed or overlooked. Jaime recalls many members thanking her after their appointments, acknowledging that they likely would not have pursued an eye exam on their own.
When a Diabetic Eye Exam Becomes Something More Meaningful
One of Jaime's most memorable in-home experiences involved visiting a young single mother for a diabetic eye exam. During the appointment, their conversation turned to the challenges of balancing work and everyday parenting responsibilities. As a mother herself, Jaime could relate to many of the same struggles she had experienced earlier in life. Rather than rushing to get to her next appointment, she took time to listen, offer words of encouragement, and connect through shared experiences with humor. By the end of the visit, the member asked Jaime for a hug and expressed how much their conversation had lifted her spirits during a particularly difficult time for them.
For Jaime, the experience reinforced that the impact of an in-home visit can extend far beyond the screening itself. Although the original purpose of the appointment was a diabetic eye exam, the personal connection they formed became just as meaningful. The two have remained in touch, with the young mother continuing to wish Jaime a Happy Mother's Day each year. This story serves as a powerful reminder that the smallest gestures of kindness can create meaningful connections and leave lasting impressions on the members we serve.
Delivering Quality Preventive Care with Dignity & Respect
Providing healthcare in members' homes requires adaptability, resourcefulness, and an appreciation for everyone’s unique circumstances. Throughout her time in the field, Jaime has encountered everything from limited space for imaging equipment to challenging living conditions that can leave members feeling embarrassed about their surroundings.
Her response is simple: focus on the member, not their environment.
"I came to look at your eyes, nothing else," she often says to reassure members and help put them at ease when being invited into their homes.
This judgment-free approach creates a more comfortable screening experience while reinforcing the dignity and respect every member deserves.
By meeting members where they are, both physically and personally, Jaime helps remove barriers to preventive care while ensuring every individual feels comfortable, valued, and respected throughout their screening experience.
A Collaborative Company Culture Centered on Better Member Outcomes
When asked what stands out most about working at Retina Labs, Jaime points to the organization's teamwork, communication, and shared commitment to improving member health outcomes.
"This is the most efficient and effective team I've ever been a part of. Everyone works together seamlessly toward a common goal."
She recognizes that delivering successful in-home screenings requires close collaboration across departments, including Outreach Specialists, Field Operations, Call Center Management, and the many other team members working behind the scenes. For Jaime, the company's culture reflects a shared purpose built on respect, compassion, and clear communication. She also values the opportunities for continued professional growth, recognizing that every interaction with members and coworkers provides a chance to learn, strengthen her skills, and contribute to the team's shared success.
Jaime's Advice: Never Underestimate Your Impact
For anyone considering a career as a Retinal Imaging Technologist, Jaime shares her perspective:
"Go for it! We never realize the impact we can have on someone’s life through a personal interaction until we experience it firsthand!"
Her personal philosophy also reflects the qualities that make her such a valued member of the Retina Labs team:
"Be kind, compassionate, empathetic, and respectful. Never underestimate the difference we can make by ensuring all members feel heard, valued, supported, and empowered."
